I saw my first game there in 1938. Hal Schumacher pitched against the Pirates and lost. Harry Danning was the catcher. Mel Ott was in right, Jojo Moore in center, Hank Lieber in left,Babe Young on first,Burgess Whitehead on second, Billy Jurges at short. I think Bill Werber was on third. I watched them all through the war years including the year they hit 221 home runs. I remember when Ernie Lombardi caught for them. They moved the infielders back to the outfield grass when he got up. (He was the slowest ever) but he'd regularly hit 400 plus foot line drives out to that enormous outfield. It was 505 feet to deepest center, 257 feet down the right field line, 278 field down the left. The upper deck hung way out over the lower and the left oer right fielder could be standing under a pop-up down the line that would scrape off the edge of the upper deck for a home run. The right field foul line was called Ottville. He probably hit 400 of his 500 hundred plus home runs there.
