Waldorf dumps Porter's Piano

The NY Times 5/3/08 City Section reported that Porter's Steinway would be removed from the Waldorf Terrace at the mezzanine above the Park Avenue enterance. While the news itself isn't nostalgia the loss of this cultural landmark certainly is. Porter lived in the Waldorf for many years before his death in 1964. He donated the Grand Steinway to the Waldorf and frequently entertained there. The Piano remained either on the Terrace or in Peacock Allley at the hotel where a succession of pianist vocalists entertained with a strong emphasis on Porter's compositions.

The most recent pianist was Daryl Sherman who played in her stride style, most influenced by Blossum Dearie, for 14 years. Daryl will move elsewhere but this decision is a sad comment on our comtemporary culture.
